Vampires Rule at People’s Choice Awards

For any teenager watching the People Choice Awards last night it was obvious that vampires rule the day. The choices were rather predictable considering Sandra Bullock, who recently was named top earning movie start of 2009 and the first woman to shepherd a film past the $200 million (U.S.) mark with The Blind Side, was named Favourite Movie Actress Wednesday night?
No surprise as well that anything vampire would win the day. To most viewing it was no surprise that the Twilight Saga won four trophies, including Favourite Movie, Favourite Franchise, Favourite Onscreen Team for Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner, plus the Breakout Movie Actor award for Lautner?
Another no brainer…..Johnny Depp was named Favourite Movie Actor as well as Actor of the Decade. Okay that one is justified considered his acting ability. Depp, dressed Hollywood dress-up for torn jeans, white shirt and vintage-looking jacket, declared himself “deeply humbled by this great honour. It comes from you the people, which means everything to me. The only reason any of us are up here is because of you, so thank you for that.”
Most winners gushed over fans and most speeches were rather lame. Queen Latifah tried humour even putting herself into a scene of New Moon.
The best part of the evening came from British comedian Sacha Baron Cohen, who presented Depp with the Actor of the Decade prize. “He singlehandedly made being a pirate fashionable again,” said Baron Cohen, referring to the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, “which is great unless you’re sailing an oil tanker off the coast of Somalia.” Depp’s role in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory made it okay for creepy middle-aged men to approach children and offer them candy, Baron Cohen said. And his coming role in Alice in Wonderland “will hopefuly make it acceptable for creepy middle-aged men to invite young girls around for tea and offer them hallucinogenic drugs.” But at the end of the day it was the vampires who ruled. TV series True Blood won Favourite TV Obsession and The Vampire Diairies won Favourite New TV Drama. Most of the actual actors playing the blood sucking creatures were absent from the festivities. None of the Vampire Diaries cast was present and Twilight appeared to be represented by Lautner, who plays werewolf Jacob Black, and Kellan Lutz, a.k.a. vampire Emmett Cullen. Most stars did attend the show at Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles. Celebs such as Hugh Jackman, Mariah Carey, Carrie Underwood, Keith Urban, Ashton Kutcher, Taylor Swift and Ellen DeGeneres were present.
“Thank you so much for this award. It really, really means so much to me because it’s from my fans,” said Mariah Carey, named Favourite R&B Artist. Listed below are the awards and who won them. Let us know if you would have chosen them.
